25th August : Civil Partnership Bill Seminar, Whites Hotel, the McCarthy suite at 8.00pm. Senator Lisa Mc Donald, a solicitor and representatives from the LGBT community, GLEN will speak on the Civil Partnership bill, Afterwards they will be available to answer your questions.*

Over a month ago, the 'Civil Partnership Bill' was approved by the Dáil's Select Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights. The purpose of the new Bill is to establish an extensive package of rights, obligations and protections for same-sex couples who register as civil partners.*

On the 1st of July the bill recognising the civil partnership of same-sex couples passed all stages in the Dáil, without a vote. The Seanad passed the Civil Partnership bill on the 8th of July. Legislation giving effect to civil partnerships has passed all stages in the Seanad by 48 to four votes. Senators spent three hours discussing the amendment, in total there were 77 amendments down for discussion.*President Mary McAleese signed the civil partnerships bill into law on the 19th of July 2010

However, gay couples will not be able to have civil partnerships until January, as tax and social welfare changes have to be made by the departments of Finance and Social Protection. The rights the bill will give include protections and obligations across areas such as protection of the couple's shared home, domestic violence, residential tenancies, succession, refugee law, pensions, taxation, social welfare and immigration.
